In a new low for the Police, a former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) is given the death sentence for a custodial death 18 years ago. Retired ACP R P Tyagi was given capital punishment by a city court for torturing two persons to death in judicial custody.

The incident happened almost 19 years ago. The case relates to the Vivek Vihar Police station in East Delhi, where two people died in custody in 1987. Another retired ACP and a sub-inspector were also convicted for dereliction of duty and tampering with records for attempting to shield the guilty.

It was an agonising wait for justice for the victim’s family as the Delhi Police allegedly tried to shield their own men by delaying registration of case. The victim’s father, Tika Ram, died during the trial.

Additional sessions judge Rajinder Kumar found ACP R P Tyagi guilty of murder of Mahinder Kumar, who was allegedly beaten up in police station on August 24, 1987. Kumar succumbed to his injuries a day later.
